Where Did The Drink Come From?
Hot chocolate is one of the most sensuous drinks imaginable. It’s a classic treat that has been enjoyed for centuries and no matter where you are in the world, you can get your hands on it. But where did this delicious chocolate drink come from?
This chocolate drink can trace its origins as far back as pre-Columbian times. The Mayan and Aztec cultures were known to consume a drink made from cacao seeds and cornmeal, which they referred to as xocolatl, meaning “bitter water.” Xocolatl was used as early currency by these ancient cultures and was considered so valuable that it was occasionally sacrificed to the gods.
The Spanish conquistadors were introduced to this bitter water upon their arrival in Mexico in 1519. They were so taken with its taste that they brought some cacao beans back home with them, which ultimately became known as “cocoa.” In addition to being devoured by the upper classes, cocoa was also mixed with water to create a cocoa beverage. It later became popular throughout Europe during the 19th century where chocolate shops popped up like crazy.
This delicious drink made its way across the pond in 1765 when Catherine the Great of Russia brought cocoa powder back from Holland after visiting her sister Sophie, Queen.
